Your Guide to a Saskatchewan Driver’s License – Clear, Supportive, and Compliant
Imagine yourself behind the wheel, cruising through the stunning landscapes of Saskatchewan—from the rolling prairies that stretch to the horizon to the pristine lakes of the north. Picture yourself driving through the charming streets of Regina or Saskatoon, where friendly communities and vibrant culture make every journey a pleasure. Or perhaps you’re exploring the beautiful Cypress Hills, where rolling hills and forests create a perfect backdrop for a weekend drive.
Saskatchewan offers incredible driving experiences—but to explore it all, you need a valid driver’s license.
Navigating the path to your Saskatchewan driver’s license can feel like a significant milestone. The Graduated Driver’s Licensing (GDL) Program is designed by Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) to help new drivers build confidence and skill gradually. This program ensures everyone on the road stays safe as you grow into a capable and responsible driver.
Whether you’re starting fresh, new to the province, or looking to understand your next steps, we’re here to help you move through the process with clarity and peace of mind. Let’s walk through what’s involved—together.
The Three Stages of Earning Your License
Saskatchewan’s GDL Program is built around three meaningful stages:
🎓 Stage 1: Learner’s Permit (Class 7)
This is where your journey begins. You’ll take a vision check and a written exam on road signs and rules. Once you pass, you’ll hold your learner’s permit for at least 9 months, and complete 25 hours of supervised driving with a licensed adult beside you. It’s a time to learn, ask questions, and get comfortable behind the wheel.
🛣️ Stage 2: Novice License (Class 5 Novice)
After passing your first road test, you’ll enter the novice stage. This phase lasts at least 12 months and allows you to drive independently, with some important restrictions—like zero alcohol tolerance—to keep you and others safe.
✅ Stage 3: Full License (Class 5)
Once you’ve gained experience and passed your final road test, you’ll graduate to a full, unrestricted Class 5 license. This is your ticket to drive freely across Saskatchewan and beyond.
Moving to Saskatchewan?
If you’re new to the province, you’ll need to exchange your out-of-province or international license within 90 days. We can help you understand what tests, if any, you’ll need to take.
